So you’ve been eyeing some of our fabulous self-tie bow ties thinking how suave you’d look with it undone on the dance floor. Trouble is you have no clue how to tie that sucker for the formal stuff. Don’t sweat it— less than 1% of adult men actually know how so you’re amongst good company. Luckily we’ve got you covered! See below for our step-by-step tutorial:
Step 1: Start with one end of the bow tie longer than the other by a few inches. The longer end of the tie should be on your right side.
Step 2: Cross the longer (right) end of the bow tie over the shorter end. Bring the longer end of the bow tie underneath the shorter end and then out from the center. You should create a half-knot similar to tying your shoelaces.
Step 3: Fold the shorter (left) end of the bow tie horizontally. It should look like part of a bow.
Step 4: Place the longer end of the bow tie over the shorter end. This will begin forming the knot.
Step 5: Fold the longer end of the bow tie horizontally.
Step 6: Insert the longer end of the bow tie through the loop at the back of the shorter end. Do so by pushing and pulling along the fold.
Step 7: Pull on both ends of the bow gently to tighten the knot.
Step 8: Adjust as needed - and don't worry, there’s no such thing as a perfect tie. Your bow tie will and should look a bit askew.
CONGRATULATIONS! You've done it! Now go purchase your big boy self-tie bow tie in your favorite print pattern.
